DeskPicture is a handy utility that makes it easy to display pictures on your desktop and manipulate them to your taste. Once you've placed one or more pictures on your desktop, DeskPicture provides many options for adjusting their appearance. In general, DeskPicture offers many of the same functions for moving pictures and changing their size as drawing applications, so if you've ever used that type of application, you should have no problems working with DeskPicture.
Using DeskPicture
DeskPicture is a control panel and must be placed in the Control Panels folder in the System folder to be used.
Below is the DeskPicture control panel dialog:
The DeskPicture control panel is used to place your pictures on your desktop.
As you can see, DeskPicture shows each monitor attached to your Macintosh. You set up a particular monitor by clicking on that monitor.
When you click on a specific monitor, DeskPicture clears that screen and places the following window on the screen:
This dialog lets you control all aspects of the picture placement on a given screen. Up to 16 pictures can be placed on each screen.
There are options here that allow you to resize and crop your picture. You can also use any picture as a tiling pattern, much like the standard Desktop Patterns control panel - except that any size picture can be used.
Other options include making your pictures disk-based to save valuable RAM, and rotating though a selection of pictures found in a folder at a specified time interval.
Holding down the option-key when this dialog is displayed reveals a number of additional options as shown below:
Be sure to check out our collection of DeskPicture files at DeskPicture.com.
The DeskPicture Hanger utility lets you change the current desk picture without opening the DeskPicture Control Panel.
In the Finder, drag any picture file onto the DeskPicture Hanger icon. DeskPicture will then replace whatever the front most desk picture is with the new picture.

- DeskPicture "control panel" is now a application.
- DeskHanger functionality integrated into the DeskPicture application.

- Expert options.
PowerPC Fat patches used for increased performance on PowerPC Macs.
DeskPicture is now fully PowerPC native. FAT patches are used to assure the maximum speed on your PowerPC Macintosh.
JPEG and GIF file formats are now handled directly by DeskPicture, XTND support removed.
With the explosive growth of the internet, JPEG and GIF files have become much more common. Because of this, JPEG and GIF file importing is now handled directly by DeskPicture. This improves the speed and general robustness of DeskPicture when using these file types.
On screen registration form.
To make registration easier, you can now fill out the registration form on your Macintosh. It can be saved as text, printed out, or send using your fax modem. This also makes it easier for us to read the form when it is sent in :-)
DeskPicture "control panel" is now a application.
As part of the reorganization to support PowerPC native code, the DeskPicture control panel is now an application. This also allows us to add new functionality to the application (see DeskHanger and Expert options below).
DeskHanger functionality integrated into DeskPicture application.
Instead of needing a separate DeskHanger utility, this functionality has been integrated into the DeskPicture control panel application directly. There is now a menu item to create a Deskpicture Hanger alias in the DeskPicture app.
DeskBlanket screen saver module included.
Do you always have your desk pictures covered up with windows? Now you can see your entire desk picture by using the DeskBlanket screen saver module. It simply draws the desktop on top of all your windows when your screen saver kicks in. This is an AfterDark compatible screen saver and can be used with any screen saver that supports AfterDark modules, such as the freeware Darkside of the Mac.
Expert options.
DeskPicture now lets you control some advanced options. These really are expert options and if you don't know what they do, you probably don't want to change them.
DeskPicture is sold as shareware, which means you can use it and decided if it is useful to you. If it is, we ask a $20 registration fee.
