What is AppSizer?
AppSizer is a control panel (cdev) that allows you to modify an application's MultiFinder memory partition size as you launch it. To do this, you just hold down the control key as you launch the application and AppSizer brings up a dialog that lets you specify the application's partition size.
You use the control panel interface to set which key you want to be the magic key that brings up the AppSizer dialog. You also use the control panel interface to register your copy of AppSizer and to read the help messages that tell you more about AppSizer.
To use AppSizer, you hold down either the control or the command key (your option) as you launch an application. When you do this, the following dialog is displayed before the actual launch of the application:
You use this dialog to control the memory partition size of your application. The dialog lists the total memory available on your Macintosh - this includes virtual memory if you have this turned on.
The Largest unused memory block shows you the maximum amount of memory that is available to allocate to your application. The Suggested memory size is the amount of memory that the creator of the application thinks is optimal to run the application.
The Minimum suggested size is the minimum amount of memory that the creator of the application thinks the application needs in order to run without crashing. Using less than this can work, but will often lead to crashes.
The Application memory size is the amount of memory you are assigning to use with the application. This number must be no greater than the largest unused block size and should be at least as large as the minimum suggested size.
Pressing the OK button will go ahead and launch the application with the amount of memory specified in the Suggested memory size text box.
Pressing the Cancel button will abort the launch of the application.
Pressing the Save button makes the current value in the Suggested memory size text box the new default for this application.
Pressing the Revert button fills in the Suggested memory size text box with the default value for the application.
AppSizer is sold as shareware, which means you can use it and see if it is useful to you. If it is, we ask a $19.95 registration fee.
New in AppSizer 2.3
Version 2.3 of AppSizer now allows you to permanently save changes in partition size for applications on READ-ONLY volumes such as CD-ROM and locked network volumes. AppSizer 2.3 now saves these changes in its preference file.
AppSizer 2.31 updates the registration information.
